The New Ontario Autism Program (OAP): A Single Pathway for Autism Diagnosis and Services in Halton
On June 22, 2017, the Ministry of Children and Youth Services (MCYS) announced changes to how families with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can access services and supports through the new Ontario Autism Program (OAP).
Under this new program, all children and youth up to the age of 18 who have a confirmed diagnosis of ASD from a qualified professional will be eligible for the new OAP. This new program will be flexible, relevant and responsive to the needs of individual children and youth with autism, regardless of age.
The new OAP will ensure autism services for children are delivered consistently across the province and allow for choice based on each child’s needs.
The key components of the new program include:
- Family-centred decision making.
- Collaborative approach to service.
- Service based on need.
- A direct funding option.
- Safe, effective autism services.
